In 2026, Flevoland celebrates its 40th anniversary. On 1 January 1986, Flevoland officially became the twelfth and youngest province of the Netherlands.

In 2026, more than 462,000 people live in Flevoland.

And that number continues to grow.

The fastest-growing province

In 2025, Flevoland had the highest relative population growth of all Dutch provinces. This growth was driven by births, people moving from other parts of the Netherlands, and international migration.

Flevoland is growing. Literally.

Almere, Lelystad, Dronten, Noordoostpolder, Urk and Zeewolde.

Between 1 January 2024 and 1 January 2025, the number of business establishments in Flevoland grew by 2.8%.

This gave Flevoland the highest growth rate of all Dutch provinces. Nationwide, the growth rate was 1.7%.

Entrepreneurs are finding their way to Flevoland.

Leader in new businesses

In 2024, 10.8% of business establishments in Flevoland were newly founded businesses.

This was the highest share of all Dutch provinces. The national average was 9.2%.

A province that once started from scratch itself remains a place where new businesses can grow.

35 start-ups per 10,000 inhabitants

In the second quarter of 2026, Flevoland had 35 start-ups per 10,000 inhabitants.

This puts Flevoland, together with South Holland, in second place in the Netherlands, behind North Holland.

New ideas are given room to grow here.

17% fewer business closures

In the second quarter of 2026, the number of entrepreneurs closing their businesses in Flevoland fell by 17% compared with a year earlier.

This was the largest decrease of all Dutch provinces.

More businesses starting and fewer closing. That’s a strong combination.

Flevoland’s economy grew by 2.0% in 2025. This means Flevoland grew faster than the Netherlands as a whole, where the economy grew by 1.8%.

There were significant differences within Flevoland. Noordoostpolder and Urk together recorded growth of as much as 4.0%.

Flevoland covers approximately 2,412 square kilometres of land and water. Of this, around 1,400 km² consists of developed land.

89,000 hectares of agricultural land

Around 89,000 hectares of Flevoland are used for agriculture.

It is therefore no surprise that agriculture, agrifood and food innovation play an important role in the province.

Its open landscape offers plenty of space for renewable energy and innovative solutions for the energy transition.
